LC Spanish opinion piece guide

Join us and discover what we can do for you.

book a trial lesson

1. Structure, content and relevance

● You will be marked on the coherence, relevance and accuracy of your writing. You get 25 marks for content and 25 marks for language. If there are no marks awarded for content, there will be no marks awarded for language.

● You will not get marks if you write a very good essay on the wrong topic or if you use learnt off sentences that are not related or are out of place.

● You are ok to go back to the article to look for relevant vocabulary but don’t use entire sentences off the article.

● You should argue in favor or against the statement but you can include ideas that justify both sides of the argument.

● Usually the first paragraph starts with a sentence like “Estoy de acuerdo con esta afirmación” or “No estoy de acuerdo con esta afirmación”. Then you should include three or four paragraphs explaining one key idea per paragraph and a final one for the conclusion.

● Do not waffle.

● Only use expressions that are relevant to what you are saying.

● Most importantly: make sure you understand the title of the opinion piece and write something relevant, on topic, not just ‘similar enough’.

2. Connectors and paragraph linking

Use connectors or linking words to make your sentences flow better:

  • por lo que (and because of this)
  • puesto que/ porque/ ya que (because)
  • pero (but); también (also)
  • de hecho (in fact)
  • aunque (although)
  • y lo que es más (furthermore)
  • de todos modos/de todas maneras (in any case)
  • no obstante/ sin embargo (however)

Use linking phrases to start new paragraphs:

  • siendo esto así...
  • dicho esto...
  • no se debe olvidar que..
  • lo que demuestra que…
  • por otro lado...
  • y no olvidemos que…

3. Expressing opinions and arguments

If you want to express a commonly held view, avoid phrases like 'mucha gente piensa que'. Instead, say:

  • como es bien sabido
  • teniendo en cuenta (consideración) que
  • como se sabe, considerando que, si consideramos que…

If you want to make clear you are expressing a personal opinion, avoid phrases like 'pienso que.../ creo que...'. Instead, use:

  • en mi opinión
  • desde mi punto de vista
  • a mi modo de ver
  • estimo que…
  • considero que…

Use good sentence starters:

  • es evidente que
  • no se puede negar que
  • es obvio que
  • se puede ver que
  • lo primero que hace falta decir es que
  • no cabe duda de que…

Try to include subjunctives:

  • Sería deseable que…
  • espero que…
  • es importante que…
  • es necesario que…
  • es vergonzoso que…
  • es una pena que…
  • ojalá que…

4. Grammar and accuracy

● Avoid using expressions that are direct translations from English but aren’t right in Spanish.

● Be aware of the most common mistake when writing in Spanish: not agreeing the adjective to the noun.

● Bear in mind that most words ending in ‘ón’ or ‘ona’ are femenine: la reunión, la ocasión, la condición…

● Equally, most words ending in ema or ama are masculine: el dilema, el problema, el sistema…

● Remember that words and expressions like familia, todo el mundo, grupo, la sociedad, la gente… are singular and therefore the verbs and the adjectives have to be singular too.

5. Vocabulary and avoiding repetition

 Use adverbs:

  • afortunadamente
  • Desgraciadamente
  • evidentemente
  • naturalmente
  • frecuentemente
  • a menudo
  • habitualmente
  • finalmente
  • nunca…

Cognates are useful to increase your vocabulary but be aware of false friends:

  • actualmente (currently)
  • éxito (success)
  • asistir (to attend)

Be aware of words that create confusion, for example:

  • anoche (last night) and esta noche (tonight)
  • pedir (as in to ask for something) and preguntar (as in to ask a question)
  • mejor (better) and mayor (older)

Do not overuse the word problema. Try:

  • la cuestión (issue)
  • el tema (en cuestión)
  • el asunto (matter)

Don't use decir - try:

  • manifestar
  • afirmar
  • declarar
  • expresar
  • exponer

Don't use mucho/a(s) - try:

  • un buen número de
  • una cantidad importante de
  • en abundancia

Don’t overuse dinero - try:

  • recursos económicos
  • riqueza

Don't use tener - try:

  • poseer
  • disponer de
  • tener a disposición

Don´t overuse después - try:

  • entonces
  • luego

Don't use ser/estar- try:

  • existir
  • representar
  • constituir
  • encontrarse
  • ubicarse

Don’t overuse diferente- try:

  • distinto
  • peculiar

Don't overuse causar- try:

  • originar
  • provocar
  • motivar
  • incitar
  • llevar a

You can use empleo as well as trabajo

6. Using more sophisticated language

Don’t use weak and vague adjectives like:

  • bueno
  • malo
  • interesante
  • importante

Instead, try:

  • favorable
  • negativo
  • fascinante
  • indispensable
  • perjudicial
  • maligno
  • beneficioso
  • impresionante

Don’t use grande when you mean importante: un exámen grande is incorrect, it should be: un exámen importante

7. Rhetorical devices

Use rhetorical devices:

1. Rhetorical questions:

  • ¿Cuál puede ser la solución?
  • ¿Qué podríamos hacer?
  • ¿Existe una solución para este problema?

2. Rule of three:

  • las redes sociales son útiles, entretenidas, pero adictivas

3. Interjections:

  • iQué tragedia!
  • iQué desastre!

4. Contrast:

  • - o bien… o bien…
  • - por un lado..., por otro lado...
  • - por una parte... por otra parte…

5. Emotional appeal:

  • ponte en su lugar
  • imagina si estuvieras en su lugar
  • ponte en el lugar de
  • no quiero imaginarme estar en su lugar…

6. Proverbs or sayings:

  • más vale prevenir que lamentar (better safe than sorry),
  • más vale pájaro en mano (a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush), ponerse las pilas (get in gear), llueve sobre mojado... (rain on a flood)
