Spanish verbs

In order to help you with your Spanish learning, we have published these pages with information that will be useful to you and you can use as reference.

Spanish verb tenses are an important aspect of the language, as they allow speakers to convey information about when an action took place, how long it lasted, and whether it has been completed or is ongoing. In Spanish, there are six main verb tenses, which are as follows:

  • Present tense (presente): This tense is used to describe actions that are happening in the present moment or actions that occur regularly. To form the present tense, you generally take the infinitive form of the verb (which ends in -ar, -er, or -ir) and add the appropriate endings.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo hablo, tú hablas, él/ella/usted habla, nosotros/nosotras hablamos, vosotros/vosotras habláis, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan.

  • Imperfect tense (pretérito imperfecto): This tense is used to describe actions that were ongoing or habitual in the past. To form the imperfect tense, you take the infinitive form of the verb and add the appropriate endings.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo hablaba, tú hablabas, él/ella/usted hablaba, nosotros/nosotras hablábamos, vosotros/vosotras hablabais, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablaban.

  • Preterite tense (pretérito indefinido): This tense is used to describe actions that took place in the past and were completed. To form the preterite tense, you take the stem of the verb and add the appropriate endings.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo hablé, tú hablaste, él/ella/usted habló, nosotros/nosotras hablamos, vosotros/vosotras hablasteis, ellos/ellas hablaron.

  • Future tense (futuro simple): This tense is used to describe actions that will take place in the future. To form the future tense, you take the infinitive form of the verb and add the appropriate endings.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo hablaré, tú hablarás, él/ella/usted hablará, nosotros/nosotras            hablaremos, vosotros/vosotras hablaréis, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablarán.

  • Conditional tense (condicional simple): This tense is used to describe actions that would take place under certain conditions. To form the conditional tense, you take the infinitive form of the verb and add the appropriate endings.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo hablaría, tú hablarías, él/ella/usted hablaría, nosotros/nosotras hablaríamos, vosotros/vosotras hablaríais, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablarían.

  • Present perfect tense (pretérito perfecto compuesto): This tense is used to describe actions that took place in the past but are still relevant in the present. To form the present perfect tense, you take the auxiliary verb haber (to have) and add the past participle of the main verb.

For example:

Hablar (to speak): Yo he hablado, tú has hablado, él/ella/usted ha hablado, nosotros/nosotras hemos hablado, vosotros/vosotras habéis hablado, ellos/ellas/ustedes han hablado.

In addition to these six main verb tenses, there are also compound tenses that combine auxiliary verbs with the main verb to convey additional information about the timing or completion of an action. These include the imperfect progressive (pretérito imperfecto progresivo), preterite perfect (pretérito anterior), future perfect (futuro compuesto), and conditional perfect (condicional compuesto) tenses.

It's worth noting that there are irregular verbs in Spanish that don't follow the standard conjugation patterns for each tense. Therefore, it's important to study and memorize irregular verbs separately to master verb tenses in Spanish.
